Now it has arrived, Alan isn’t so sure about the reward for graduating summa cum laude from Starfleet Academy: priority delivery of one’s own ‘beep-beep’ machine five years later because, as it says on the gift tag, ‘Quia hoc in tempore hoc tibi necesse est’.

Opening the box and trying it out, the cherished prize now seems rather less reassuring than it was, perhaps, originally intended to be.
