Slavishly following the Hollywood playbook, Alan’s studio is remaking a classic of European film shorn of all its charm. In this case, a little known 1980s BBC Play for Today. Alan, arriving back from the future and effortlessly disguised in twentieth century Thatcher’s Britain simply by adopting the nom-de-guerre ‘Tanqueray’, is trying to ‘buy’ a half pint of real ale costing £0.25. Sadly, he finds he cannot quite invest what the young Peter Firth – a golden haired Apollo – managed in the line that comprises the comic highpoint of the entire play (we did have a lot else on our minds at the time): “Alas, I have no Ps!”
